Andrea Echeverri

Who is She?

Lead singer of the Aterciopelados, 45-year-old Andrea Echeverri is one of the ambassadors of Colombian rock music. She has been with the band for nearly two decades, and together, they have produced eight albums and won two Latin Grammys. In 2005, Echeverri made her solo debut with a self-titled album.

Which new Colombian bands would you recommend?

I like Sistema Solar, Velandia and La Tigra. And also Pernett, Sidestepper, Los Carrangueros, Petrona Martínez, Meridian Brothers, Alerta Kamara, Paito and Puro Indio.

A day trip for visitors to Bogotá?

Bogotá is surrounded by beautiful mountains; Monserrate and Guadalupe stand guard over the city. At the top of Monserrate is a church with a bleeding statue of Christ, and people climb the mountain on foot as an offering to Him. There is also a market selling spiritual articles, places to eat fritanga (cholesterol city!) and lobster, plus a cable car and a funicular railway. www.cerromonserrate.com

The best place to buy music?

Amoeba is paradise for music lovers. It’s an enormous music store with a huge selection. The staff knows a lot about music and can make recommendations.
