Celebrating the Americas

Over the past 12 years, dozens of fascinating individuals have appeared in our pages. Some of them have become celebrities, others we’ve come to call friends. All of them share roots in Latin America, home to some of their favorite places and top recommendations.

In Brazil, i recommend

“With theaters like Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso, Rio de Janeiro has decades of history when it comes to music, theater, and many other forms of artistic expression. Salvador da Bahia is home to the Concha Acústica, which is pure energy. In Porto Alegre, I perform at the Opinião event hall. I love Belo Horizonte and all the historic weight of Minas Gerais. Brazil, there’s no better place on the planet!”

In Latin America, I love

“I had the honor of singing with Julieta Venegas in Mexico City. We sang at the FENIX Awards, held in a spectacular, recently restored theater space called Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Isis. The city’s neighborhoods remind me a lot of the place where I spent part of my life in São Paulo.”

In Chile, i recommend

“Montegrande, in Valle del Elqui. It’s a community with about 30 houses between the mountains alongside Río Cochiguaz, the purest water you’ll find in the valley. And you can buy perfume made with interesting essences from Isabela Rastello.”

In Latin America, I love

“Cuenca, in Ecuador. The landscape changes completely from Guayaquil to the Andean setting of Cuenca, with its silvery lakes.”

Don’t miss this!
“The Río Parana in Rosario, Argentina, where large commercial ships put on quite a show.”

In Ecuador, I recommend

“Guayaquil and the neighborhood of Las Peñas, thanks to its cultural activity and nightlife. La Paleta is a perfect place to have drinks with friends.”

In Latin America, I love

“Bogotá, mainly because of the energy of its people. They also have one of the biggest theater festivals in the world (FITB), which I try not to miss. It’s held every two years, and the city comes alive with the rhythm of theater. It’s a great time to visit.”

In Brazil, I recommend

“Belém is a very special city for people looking for native ingredients and authentic Brazilian flavors. The restaurant Remanso do Bosque and the Ver-o-Peso market are great local spots.”

In Latin America, I love

“I love Mexico and its culture. In the capital, I recommend chef Enrique Olvera’s restaurant Pujol. For museum lovers, the city offers so many great places. My favorites include the Museo Nacional de Antropología and Frida Kahlo’s home in Coyoacán.”

In Argentina, I recommend

“In addition to Buenos Aires – which I consider one of the best cities in the world – Mar Del Plata and Villa La Angostura. The first has the air of an old-time beach resort, with attractions like the Gran Hotel Provincial, the Club de Pescadores, and the Casino. La Villa, as they call La Angostura, is full of unforgettable Patagonia landscapes, good food, and fun excursions in winter and especially in summer. To eat, head to Tinto Bistro.”

In Latin America, I love

“Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City. In Santiago, I like walking through the neighborhood of Lastarria, visiting the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM), eating at Liguria by night.”

In Perú, I recommend

“The city of my grandparents: Arequipa. For the emotional connection, beauty and unique qualities. There’s amazing light for filming, and the food is incredible. I love Trattoria del Monasterio: delicious food in a great location. Don’t leave without trying the artisanal cheese and the magnificent sweets. You can find a La Ibérica location on nearly every corner: the best dark chocolate in the world.”

In Latin America, I love

“I completely fell in love with Medellín, Colombia. The Coffee Route fascinates me, and I love relaxing at the cabins in Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona.”

In Colombia, I recommend

“My hometown of Santa Marta, Colombia, has several beautiful beaches, in addition to the river, the mountains, and abundant greenery. The indigenous peoples say that it is the heart of the world, so it has a very lovely and powerful energy. I particularly like Ouzo. I also recommend Playa Chengue in Tayrona, and the Costeño Beach hostel. A paradise.”

Don’t miss this!
“In Colombia, you can see pink flamingoes blending with a beautiful sunset at La Guajira.”

In Perú, I recommend

“My favorite city is Lima; it’s where I’m from. A stroll through the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco and a chilcano (a cocktail made with pisco) at the bar Piselli. Lunch at Isolina or La Picantería. Dinner at Maido. A visit to the ruins at Pachacamac, followed by lunch at La Casa de Don Cucho.”

In Latin America, I love

“Taking a leisurely walk through Palermo, in Buenos Aires, having a cocktail at Florería Atlántico, and eating achuras (chitlins) or steak at Don Julio.”

Don’t miss this!
“To get a profound understanding of our roots, try a weekend in the Valle Sagrado de los Incas.”
