A Green World

When Al Gore presented his “inconvenient truth,” he generated what Malcolm Gladwell calls a “tipping point,” where the human momentum towards social change becomes unstoppable.

An experiment with monkeys in Japan illustrates the phenomenon perfectly. When their regular food was replaced with sweet potatoes covered in
sand, all the monkeys rejected the food. Then, one monkey washed hers in a stream. Some imitated her, but many monkeys either weren’t learning or didn’t want to learn. Eventually, another monkey also began to wash his potatoes, becoming the tipping point after which all of the monkeys started washing their food, even monkeys from  another island! This story echoes our new ecological awareness. We are all – in magazine included – trying to find ways to contribute to improving the planet or at the  least, to not exacerbate the existing damage.

In addition to using printing processes and paper that are certified to ensure sustainable management of our forests, this issue of in is dedicated to ecological tourism, highlighting cities in South America and Europe where you can choose “green” hotels, restaurants and activities. We also include
a guide to high-quality, all-natural and vegetarian restaurants in Buenos Aires, Lima and Santiago. (Readers who still enjoy red meat can look forward to
a barbecue guide in a future issue.) And there’s even more! Don’t miss this issue of in. Enjoy your trip!
