May has become a month of festivities at in magazine. Ever since our first issue in 2004, we’ve dedicated this month to highlighting different aspects of Latin America. For 2010, we have twice as much reason to celebrate: it’s both our anniversary and the regional bicentennial. The whole year is filled with events commemorating 200 years of Latin American independence – exhibits, seminars, conferences and festivals – all imbued with an enormous sense of pride in what we’ve been able to build out of this freedom.
We offer our readers a tour of five Latin American countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru – showcasing cultural treasures like archeological sites, colonial churches, historic buildings and modern cultural centers. As part of this tribute to our regional culture, well-known Peruvian writer Alfredo Bryce Echenique examines the importance of Latin American literature.
And because there’s more to the Americas than just the south, we’ve also included a visit to San Francisco, California, where we explore the city, sample its excellent cuisine and soak up its cultural freedom. This issue also features fun tips for visiting Punta del Este (Uruguay), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and Buzios (Brazil). Meanwhile, a new column dedicated to South American folk art will take us to a variety of destinations, offering an appreciation of what our people are able to create using traditional materials and techniques.
Oh, and one more thing… Paula Fontaine hasn’t adopted a radical new look. Beginning with this issue, I will step up as Editor-in-Chief of in magazine, while Paula takes on the challenges of overseeing the general management and editorial direction of our company’s many projects.
Have a great trip, with in magazine by your side.
