Everyday Style

MARÍA soledad ramÍrez

Many of us who have traveled in Europe have been left with the secret hope that, yes, this will be the time that we’ll magically catch that chic European style, but we rarely manage it. However, we also seem forget how we cause a sensation when we wear something that might appear “too Latin American” to us. Our eagerness to embrace European sensibilities is surely a response to our bad habit of being blind to our own strengths, the quality of our native materials, the colors, the boundless creativity. In this issue, we avoid that pitfall. Our first fashion special is a wide-ranging look at both international clothing brands in the region and Latin American creators who are putting the continent at the vanguard of design, as this month’s interview attests.

We’ve included fashion photography with a focus on travel, as well as a selection of stylish objects to bring home as gifts. In this issue’s essay, a noted fashion expert examines Latin American women’s sense of style, while our feature on Milan captures top European trends (for our personal records).

But there is more to style than just clothing. We tour the Peruvian town of Paracas, a destination south of Lima that is enjoying a serious comeback, and we explore the charms of a historic U.S. city: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We’ve also included a weekend photo guide to Brasilia and its spectacular architecture in honor of the city’s 50th anniversary.

Ultimately, style is something we’re all after, and Latin Americans are lucky enough to experience the best of both worlds, designing and dressing with pride. Our indigenous and European roots have given us a unique touch, which something that we should never forget.

Enjoy your trip and this issue of in.
