A Long Tradition of Wine

March is wine harvest time in Chile and Argentina. What better occasion to present this special wine issue of in Magazine? In homage to the region’s winemaking heritage, we approach the subject from several perspectives. In our cover story, we look at the work of enologists and winemakers in locales far from the traditional wine-producing valleys of Chile and Argentina, innovative projects that strive to create wines of quality and character in extreme conditions.

This search for excellence also guides our selection of five wineries in five different countries. The winemaking tradition isn’t limited to the two major Latin American producers. Wine came to our continent with the Spaniards and has been produced throughout the region since colonial times. There are vineyards near the equator, high among the Colombian Andes and in the south of Peru. You’ll always be able to find a place to sample fine wine.

This special issue also looks at other aspects of wine: recipes and pairing; hotels, restaurants and tours focused on wine; avant-garde designs for drinking wine or taking it on a picnic; informative Websites; and a guide to well-stocked wine shops. We’ve also included beverage recommendations for those readers who aren’t fans of the grape.

And there’s more. This month’s issue explores Cali, Colombia’s salsa capital; the culinary delights of Rio de Janeiro; and the green parks of London.
