Issue: 4/2011: Verdant Velocity

IN A WORLD THAT IS increasingly aware of the need to protect the environment and use energy efficiently, the automobile industry is definitely keeping pace. The emergence of hybrid and electric cars, as well as prototypes that use hydrogen, have set the industry on the right track. The question is – how far can the research go? And perhaps more importantly – will consumers embrace these clean (but sometimes slower) technologies? Our cover story sheds some light on this phenomenon.

But it’s not just about environmental awareness. We also want to showcase the inherent beauty in car design. Our photo essay highlights six models that have yet to hit the market, all of them green, all of them gorgeous. You can also marvel at the museums, factories and car collections that provide a historical context for this mode of transportation. We’ve included something for motorcycle lovers, and for those who don’t like driving, our Opinion piece is a loving homage to bicycles.

Thinking of driving to Buenos Aires or Guayaquil? Depending on where you start, you’ll travel thousands of fascinating miles. But, for now, we offer two intriguing travel features, examining the Argentinean capital’s status as the 2011 World Book Capital and Guayaquil as a Latin American version of New York.

Finally, thanks to airplanes (another mode of transportation that dates back almost as far as the car), you won’t need to spend days and days traveling. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy your flight!
