Issue: 7/2012: Association
« Back to Archive

By María Soledad Ramírez

As you can tell from our cover, with this issue we welcome the association of LAN and TAM in the new LATAM Airlines Group. And so, we celebrate Brazil with a travel special dedicated to this immense and diverse country, visiting beaches and inland regions, to whet your appetite for more verde-amarelo.

This month, our cover story looks at Latin American design, a discipline – or art – that is essentially the result of a blending of our indigenous and European heritage and, now, our relationship with the rest of the world. Every country in South America has a rich history of design, showcasing all the variety that the field entails. Our functional objects as well as our decorative trifles – even our graphic concepts and theories – date back to our pre-Columbian cultures, before the arrival of the Spanish and the printing press. This wonderful heritage has provided the basis for the discipline’s constant growth, from the mid-20th century to the present day, with Latin American design – both graphic and industrial – reaping praise from the critics and international awards.

To highlight this success, we’ve selected six illustrators from the region who use drawing to express ideas and concepts. We also offer a look at 14 Latin American design objects – including chairs, lamps, cabinets and park equipment – that are adored (and used) around the globe. Finally, we examine a new convergence between the worlds of architecture and design that is producing a slew of notable interior spaces.

Integration has created a Latin American identity that in Magazine is proud to celebrate.
